CHICAGO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- A state representative of Michigan was found dead from an apparent suicide Tuesday, hours after he was released from detention following drunk driving, local media reported.

The sudden death of John Kivela, 47, a Democratic representative from Marquette, is still under investigation by local police, according to Detroit Free Press.

The former mayor of Marquette was arrested on Monday for driving under the influence of alcohol for a second time while in office. Police records show he had a blood-alcohol concentration of more than 0.17 percent, while the legal limit for a motorist is 0.08 percent.

Kivela's first arrest took place in November of 2015, when he was found speeding and swerving with an open bottle of whiskey in the car. He ended up getting 12 months probation and was fined some 1,600 U.S. dollars.
