Lebanese army thwarts drug smuggling at Beirut port

BEIRUT, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army said Tuesday that its intelligence unit seized around 500 kg drugs out of Beirut sea port.

In a statement by the Orientation Directorate, the army said "as a result of monitoring and follow-up, the Directorate of Intelligence at the Port of Beirut seized this morning a container containing about 487.5 kg of Hash placed in 1,639 tablets in the form of soap cubes, in an attempt to smuggle them from Lebanon to a foreign country."

It added "the container was handed over to the General Customs Directorate, while the smugglers are being pursued so as to arrest them and refer them to the competent court."
