SYDNEY, May 9 (Xinhua) -- An Australian man has been charged on Tuesday after allegedly trying to smuggle a substantial amount of methamphetamine into Tasmania in his underwear.

Jean Michel Christophe Wimmer, 32, was arrested at the Hobart Airport after a random, routine inspection by a drug detection dog of passengers arriving on a flight from Sydney.

Two police officers subsequently searched the man and found 522 grams of methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, with an estimated street value of 370,000 U.S. dollars.

Acting Detective Inspector Marco Cosentino said the find was "a significant seizure for Tasmania."

"It is one method of bringing ice into Tasmania, and we had a win for the good guys today. I believe the drugs were destined for the communities, for the users," he said.

Wimmer was charged with one count of unlawfully importing a controlled substance and one count of trafficking a controlled substance and could face life imprisonment if found guilty.

Cosentino said the man was calm throughout the arrest and had been remanded to appear in a Hobart court at a later date.
