CARACAS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- A police officer died on Thursday of injuries sustained in Wednesday's confrontation with protesters in the northern state of Carabobo, Venezuelan prosecutor-general announced.

It takes the number of people killed in the country's violent protests since April 1 to 35. Hundreds more have been wounded.

"The authorities of Carabobo state are investigating the death of police officer Gerardo Barrera, who lost his life on May 4," read the announcement.

Reports said students held demonstrations across Caracas, the capital city, on Thursday as the month-long protest movement continues in the country.

The opposition party Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) has been calling for regular protests since early April to demand early general elections.
