UNITED NATIONS, April 18 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has nominated Achim Steiner of Germany as new administrator of UN Development Program (UNDP), said a spokesperson here on Tuesday.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing that Guterres has requested the General Assembly to confirm Steiner as the head of the UNDP for a term of four years.
Steiner is going to succeed Helen Clark who is the former prime minister of New Zealand and has been heading the UNDP since 2009.
Steiner was the executive director of UN Environment Program (UNEP) from 2006 to 2016. He is currently director of Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford.
Headquartered in New York City, the UNDP is the United Nations' global development network. It works to provide expert advice on development for developing countries.
The UNDP administrator is considered to be the third highest-ranking official within the UN system after the UN secretary-general and deputy secretary-general.
