ALGIERS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League said on Monday announced that it will send some 100 observers to monitor the parliamentary elections in Algeria due on May 4.
Visiting Head of Election Affairs Department at the Arab League, Hadia Sabri, said that the observers would be arriving at Algiers at the end of March. He made the remarks after his meeting with head of Algeria's High Independent Authority for Election Monitoring, Abdelouahab Derbal.
Sabri further specified that his visit to Algeria is part of following up preparations for the election in May, saying the observers of the AL are due to be deployed across 48 provinces of Algeria.
Marked by the participation of 12,591 candidates, the May elections are the sixth electoral contest since 1989, when the North African nation has adopted multi-party system.
The two ruling parties of the National Liberation Front and the National Democratic Rally confirmed their participation, saying their objective is to safeguard their majority in local assemblies and the two houses of parliament.
The majority of opposition parties, either Islamists or secular, have decided to participate in the election.
