URUMQI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Heavy fog left more than 180 flights canceled, delayed, or diverted at an airport in Urumqi Monday.
According to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, as of 15:30 p.m., 72 flights had been canceled, 69 delayed, and another 42 were diverted to nearby airports.
Fog has lingered in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as temperatures rebounded this month.
The city has had more than 10 foggy days in December, surpassing the average of 8.4 days with fog in December over the past three decades.
A strong gale also hit Xinjiang Monday morning, stranding 320 people on highways in Maytas, known for strong wind and blizzards. As of 5 p.m., all passengers had been evacuated to safety.
