25 confirmed dead after ferry capsizes in northwestern Myanmar

YANGON, Oct.17 (Xinhua) -- At least 25 people have been confirmed dead after a ferry capsized in Myanmar's northwestern Sagaing region last week, according to Myanmar Fire Services Department Monday.

Other 155 people survived the tragedy which occurred on Saturday in Chindwin river over hitting a rock when the ferry was on its voyage from Homelin to Monywa.

The number of the missing is yet to be confirmed.

According to the regional police authorities, about 180 passengers were on board the ferry but the survivors claimed that there were about 300 passengers who had boarded from stops along the way.

There were three similar cases within two years along the Chindwin river due to the contraventions.

U Tun Tun Win, a regional parliamentary representative, said that the incident was due to the ferry being overloaded.
