UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday announced the appointment of Hubert Price, a retired lieutenant colonel from the United States Armed Forces, as head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

"Mr. Price brings to this new position more than 20 years of experience in United Nations peacekeeping operations, most recently, as director of mission support in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) from 2010 until 2015, and later as acting assistant secretary-general for the Department of Field Support until June 2016," the secretary-general said in a statement issued here by Ban's spokesman.

From 2003 to 2004, Price served as chief integrated support services in the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET), followed by two years as Chief Administrative Officer in the United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI).

He then served as chief mission support in the United Nations Mission in Timor (UNMIT) from 2006 until 2010, which included periods during which he simultaneously acted as interim chief of staff.

Price has been part of United Nations peacekeeping operations since 1994, serving in a variety of capacities in Mozambique, Angola and at the United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB) in Brindisi.

Price is a graduate of the University of Richmond in the U.S. state of Virginia, and holds an advanced degree in systems management from the University of Southern California.

Born in 1953, he is married and has two children.

UNSOS is a field support operation led by the UN Department of Field Support.

It was set up by the UN Security Council with a mandate to deliver a logistics capacity support package to the African Union Mission in Somalia, which is critical in achieving its operational effectiveness and in preparation for a possible UN peacekeeping operation.
