YANGON, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Singapore stood as the largest investor in the hotels and tourism sector of Myanmar, with investments totaling 1.62 billion U.S. dollars as of August, official media reported Thursday.
Singapore-based companies invested in 22 projects, followed by Thailand with 445.630 million U.S. dollars in 11 projects and Vietnam with 440 million U.S. dollars in one project.
Hotels and tourism sector is one of the promoted sectors of the country. According to figures of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, 3 million tourists visited the country from January to August.
Singapore is also among leading investors in Myanmar, standing the second largest after China with 13.5 billion U.S. dollars of investment as of August.
A total of 214 Singaporean firms have been permitted to operate in Myanmar, according to Myanmar Investment Commission.
