BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A national inspection has found that schools in rural areas still face food safety risks, the Ministry of Education said Monday.
The inspection, conducted by the office of national education inspection for the State Council, targeted 143 primary and secondary schools in rural areas in 18 provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Jilin.
Some school canteens have problems with disinfection or washing dishes, while others fail to meet food storage and safety requirements, said the ministry, adding that staff in some schools lacked awareness of food safety.
The ministry urged local authorities to strengthen the monitoring of food safety to spot potential safety risks in rural schools.
