TOKYO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as investor sentiment was dampened by a slump on global bourses with a sour market mood underscored by a comparatively firm yen against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 308.34 points, or 1.88 percent, from Tuesday to end the day at 16,083.11.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, relinquished 28.22 points, or 2.17 percent, to finish at 1,271.98.
Notable decliners at the close of play comprised real estate, glass and banking-linked issues.
The day's turnover was 2,458.5 billion yen (24.29 billion U.S. dollars).
