PHNOM PENH, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Singapore-based ride-sharing firm Grab launched its services in Cambodia on Tuesday, three months after its U.S. rival, Uber Technologies Inc., operated in the kingdom.
Speaking at the launching ceremony in Phnom Penh, Cambodian Transport Minister Sun Chanthol said currently, there were quite a number of transport App providers already active in the country, including the two international companies.
"This ride hailing service is a very new concept for those of us in Cambodia," he said. "We are pleased that they are confident in doing businesses in Cambodia."
The minister said the ministry had signed a memorandum of understanding with Grab to work together in traffic management, utilizing Grab's anonymized GPS car points to help Cambodian traffic authorities.
Cambodia became the eighth country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for Grab, according to the firm's profile. With the addition of Phnom Penh, Grab is now in 156 ASEAN cities with over 2.1 million drivers.
Chanthol said that about 500 Cambodian drivers had registered with Grab.
Grab co-founder Tan Hooi Ling said Grab was a ride-hailing market leader in Southeast Asia.
"Grab is committed to improving the lives of Cambodians and supporting Cambodia's economic potential through our region's best technological knowhow and innovation in transportation and payment," she said.
