RABAT, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan authorities seized 1.5 tons of cannabis on Saturday in the northern city of Tangier, local media reported.

The banned substance was packed in 54 bags on board of a truck heading to a nearby beach to be transported abroad via boat, Le360.ma news site said.

The driver as well as two other people accompanying him left the vehicle and they are on the run, the same source said.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis farming in the past decade, Morocco remains the world's largest cannabis resin harvester.

According to the 2016 report by the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime, Morocco ranks first among 129 cannabis producing countries throughout the period from 2009 to 2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon and India.
