NEW DELHI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Muslim woman in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh alleged that her husband gave her triple talaq (instant divorce) just because she attended a political rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I had gone to attend Modi's rally recently as his government plans to ban and criminalise triple talaq among Muslims. When I came back from the rally, my husband said the Prime Minister can't do anything to harm him and gave me triple talaq," Fayra told the media Sunday.

However, the woman's husband, Danish, claimed that he divorced his wife as she was having an affair outside the marriage.

The Indian government is set to bring in a legislation in Parliament to criminalize triple talaq, a practice of instant divorce common among the country's minority Muslims, with a three-year jail term for the husband.

Though India's Supreme Court struck down the practice as "illegal" in a landmark judgment on Aug. 22 this year, the practice is still prevalent in India.
