Qatar to organize carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup 2022

DOHA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Qatar has announced that the FIFA 2022 World Cup will be a carbon-neutral event, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported Monday.

Essa bin Hilal al Kuwari, a Qatari senior official, made the remarks while delivering a speech on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Industry Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada at the opening session of the "Sustainability Summit" in Doha on Sunday.

Al-Kuwari stated, "Qatar is planning to organize a carbon neutral tournament with all its facilities complying with the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) standards approved by FIFA".

He referred to the "tarsheed programme" which aims to reduce the consumption of water and electricity by 35 percent and 25 percent respectively in the coming five years. "Qatar aims to reduce carbon emission by 6 million tonnes by 2022," he added.

The two-day summit which held in Doha on Nov. 26-27, aimed to establish a platform for practitioners, experts from national and international organizations to share knowledge and ideas, related to the enhancement of climate actions and achieve a diversification to a low-carbon economy.
