COLOMBO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Three people including two women died on Monday when their car crashed with a train carrying fuel at a level crossing in a town north of Colombo, local police said.

The accident took place when the car tried to pass through the crossing without noticing the arrival of the train bound for Colombo.

It happened around 8:00 a.m. local time in the town called Veyangoda in the Western Province of Sri Lanka.

Police said another person injured in the incident has been rushed to a nearby hospital.

Sri Lanka is noted for its high number of rail accidents.

The National Council on Road Safety in its report said there were 84 vehicle-train collisions at level crossings last year.

The Sri Lankan Railway Department has taken steps to educate people to avoid accidents involving trains.
