LUSAKA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's human rights body has been elected as a member of the Steering Committee of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) as well as chairperson of the southern African region, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
Zambia's Human Rights Commission was elected during the 11th Biennial Conference currently underway in Kigali, Rwanda, which is discussing the role of human rights bodies in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
NANHRI is a continental body that brings together 44 national human rights institutions in Africa in order to strengthen their capacities and networking in promoting human rights in their respective countries.
Mweelwa Muleya, the spokesperson of the Human Rights Commission, said Zambia was elected during elections at the conference on Wednesday, November 8.
According to him, Zambia's election demonstrates the confidence the NANHRI has in it, adding that the election is an honor to the country as it also places a heavy national responsibility of providing leadership in building a sustainable culture of respect for human rights.
