ISLAMABAD, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the road accident that took place in Pakistan's eastern province of Punjab's Attock district on Wednesday night has risen to 27, local media reported on Thursday.
According to the reports, the death toll rose to 27 after five more injured succumbed to their injuries during treatment overnight.
Over 50 others who sustained injuries in the accident are still under treatment at three different hospitals.
The accident happened at around 10:00 p.m. local time when a passenger bus fell into a gorge near Dhok Pathan area of Pindi Ghep region of Attock.
A hospital official said the death toll might further rise as four of the injured are still in critical condition.
Over 80 people onboard were traveling from the northwestern district of Kohat to attend a religious gathering in Raiwind, a town near the provincial capital of Lahore.
According to the police, the initial investigation hinted that the driver of the ill-fated bus could not control the bus while negotiating a sharp turn after the vehicle's brakes failed.
According to official data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 9,000 road accidents are reported every year since 2011 in the country, killing more than 4,500 people on average annually.
