Brother of Marseille knife attack put under formal investigation

PARIS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The brother of a knifeman who killed two young women last month at a main train station in the southern French city of Marseille was placed under formal investigation on Friday on charges of criminal terrorist conspiracy, according to local report.

Anis Hanachi was transferred from Italy to France on Thursday as part of investigation into the knife attack that left two young victims last month. The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State (IS).

On Oct. 1, Ahmed Hanachi, armed with two knives stabbed to death two cousins, both aged 20 years, at Saint-Charles station in Marseille before being shot dead by military soldiers of Sentinelle operation who were patrolling the zone.

The attacker from a Tunisian origin had a record of petty crime and joined France illegally ealier this year.

According to BFMTV news channel, Anis, who has travelled to Syria for Jihad, was believed to be the brain of last month's knife attack.

A string of stabbings claimed by the terrorist group had shaken main European countries and put the region's security at risk.
