BEIRUT, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Iranian senior adviser to international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said on Friday that Iran will "protect Lebanon's stability and government."

Velayati made the remarks after talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, adding that Iran supports the independence of Lebanon.

"We commend the recent success of Lebanese government in fighting corruption," he said.

He went on saying that "Lebanon's victory over terrorism is a victory for us all," noting that Israel and the United States are behind the terrorists.

The Iranian official also hailed Lebanon's foreign policies as "active."

Citing the recent talks on the Syrian conflict in Azerbaijan as an example of increased efforts in the political realm, Velayati said the political efforts are "necessary" as the battles against terrorism must be "accompanied by diplomatic efforts."
