NEW DELHI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and around 100 others injured after a boiler exploded Wednesday at a state-run power project in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, local media reported.

The blast took place during the evening inside National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant at Raibareli, about 82 km southeast of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Eight persons have been killed and around 100 injured after a boiler exploded in NTPC plant at Raibareli," New Delhi-based television news channel NDTV said.

A senior government official told Xinhua over 100 people had suffered burn injuries in the blast.

"Right now, it is difficult to give the exact death toll but preliminary reports suggest over 100 people have suffered burn injuries," the official said. "We are taking injured in the incident to hospitals."

The authorities have rushed police, ambulances and disaster management personnel to the spot to carry out rescue work.
