MAPUTO, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Mozambican authorities said Tuesday it is crucial to strengthen security against terrorist attacks at police stations and other national institutions, especially in Cabo Delgado, the northernmost province of Mozambique.

Police spokesman Inacio Dina told press that investigations were ongoing into the armed attacks that killed police and civilians in the district of Mocimboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado.

The police spokesman said security has been reinforced in many strategic spots of the country, where there is a suspected fundamentalist movement.

"We applaud the collaboration of the Islamic Council of Mozambique to ensure peace and stability in the country and denounce any kind of radicalism that could undermine the peaceful coexistence of Muslims with other religions or jeopardize the development of the country," Dina said.

The Islamic Council of Mozambique met with the provincial government last week to avoid fundamentalist tendency in the future.

The police have detained about 100 people who are allegedly involved in the attacks on October 5, in which two policemen, a community leader and 13 Islamists died. Enditem
