ANKARA, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Saturday detained 49 foreign nationals in the capital Ankara over suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) extremist group, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The report said some of the suspects were planning an attack on the country's 94th Republic Day celebration on Oct. 29, citing an official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ankara chief public prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants for 55 foreign nationals, and 49 of them had been detained in raid operation, the report said.

Some of the suspects are also believed to have participated in armed conflicts abroad, it added.

Turkey has suffered several bloody attacks blamed on IS militants since 2015, including a New Year attack this year on an Istanbul nightclub, during which 39 people were killed by an IS gunman.

The police have stepped up crackdown against suspected IS cells across the country for the recent years.
