Uganda confirms second Marburg case

KAMPALA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's ministry of health on Friday said a second person late Thursday died of the deadly Marburg Viral Disease (MVD) in country's eastern district of Kween.

Henry Mwebesa, acting director general of health services, said in a statement that the blood samples taken from a 38-year-old male, brother to the earlier confirmed index case and the probable case tested positive of the highly fatal virus.

"Despite the tireless efforts from a dedicated case management team to revive this case, he unfortunately passed away," said Mwebesa.

The number of cumulative cases has grown to 15, with two confirmed, four suspected, three probable cases and six ruled out.

The last Marburg outbreak in Uganda was reported in central and western parts of the east African country in 2014.

Marburg is a severe and highly fatal disease caused by a virus from the same family as the one that causes Ebola hemorrhagic fever, according to the World Health Organization.

According to the global health body, the illness caused by Marburg virus begins abruptly, with severe headache and malaise.
