RIGA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- EU affairs, particularly the bloc's Eastern partnership initiative, dominated talks during Romanian Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu's visit here on Tuesday, the Latvian parliamentary press service informed.
Meeting with the speaker of the Romanian parliament's upper house, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis emphasized that the Eastern Partnership program must remain high on the EU agenda.
"The upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in November will be an opportunity to express political support for Eastern Partnership countries' European integration aspirations, as well as to develop practical cooperation on strengthening institutions and anti-corruption measures, promoting trade, developing energy projects and other areas," the Latvian president said.
Latvian parliament speaker Inara Murniece, who also discussed the EU's future with the Romanian Senate speaker, noted that Latvia wants to belong to the core of the EU, or member states developing closer cooperation.
They both underlined the importance of the bloc's unity, with Popescu-Tariceanu saying that the EU's future should be based on cohesion and solidarity, which have been ensuring member states' growth and prosperity so far.
Discussing the Eastern Partnership's progress in Ukraine, Moldova and other countries involved in the program, Murniece and Popescu-Tariceanu agreed that this cooperation format allows for partner countries' closer cooperation with the EU, which in turn can take an individual approach to each partner.
