BERLIN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The German government on Friday warned the U.S. administration against the adverse consequences of decertifying Teheran's compliance with the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.
Germany believed that the agreement in place was "an important instrument to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran," Steffen Seibert, official spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), said in a statement.
Should "an important country like the United States come to a different conclusion as it appears to be the case, we will work even harder with other partners to maintain this cohesion", Seibert added.
The warning echoed the concerns voiced earlier by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD).
"It's imperative that Europe sticks together on this issue", Gabriel told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).
The foreign minister cautioned that a "denunciation of the Iran agreement" could turn the Middle East into a "hot crisis region."
Green Party leader Cem Oezdemir, who is being tipped as a potential successor to Gabriel, also joined such criticism on Friday.
The Trump administration is due to inform the Congress by Oct. 15 whether Tehran is complying with the deal. If it decides Tehran is not, it could open the way for U.S. lawmakers to reimpose sanctions against Iran.
