WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. military said on Wednesday the State Department had approved an arms sale of medium range air-to-air missiles to the Netherlands.

According to a statement by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the Netherlands had requested a possible sale of 26 AIM-120 C-7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles and other related equipment worth 53 million U.S. dollars.

"The proposed sale will improve the Netherland's capabilities for mutual defense, regional security, force modernization, and U.S. and NATO interoperability," said the statement.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. government personnel or contractor representatives to the Netherlands, it added.

The arms sale is not concluded at the moment as it still needs the approval of the U.S. Congress.
