RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's top travel destination, the city of Rio de Janeiro, is a great place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there, according to a survey released on Saturday.
Some 72 percent of Rio residents would relocate if they had a choice because of rampant crime, polling firm Instituto Datafolha reported.
"Seven out of 10 residents would leave Rio due to violence," the Globo news network said on its website, citing the survey.
Residents of Rio -- a tourism magnet famed for its carnival celebrations and lively beaches -- said they mainly feared criminals (49 percent), but also the police officers (23 percent). Only two percent of respondents said they feared neither.
As much as 90 percent of respondents said they felt unsafe going out at night, and more than 70 percent were unhappy with the way the state government is handling crime fighting.
The survey comes just days after a high-profile anti-crime operation targeted one of the city's largest favelas, or slums, leading to a shootout between local drug gangs and police backed by military troops.
There have been some 4,000 shootings in the city this year alone, according to the Public Security Institute, and 103 police have been killed.
The survey queried 812 residents earlier this week, and has a four-point margin of error.
