TRIPOLI, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed Libyan government Saturday disclosed the details of the slaughter of Egyptian Christians by the Islamic State (IS) in the northern city of Sirte two years ago.

In a statement on its Facebook account, the forces allied with the government of national accord published confessions of an IS militant captured during the war against the terror group in Sirte last year.

On Feb. 15, 2015, the IS released a video showing the slaughter of 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in the Libyan city.

"This member was present behind the cameras during the slaughter of the Egyptians and during their burial in southern Sirte," the government forces said in the statement.

The IS militants at the scene include IS ruler of North Africa, known as Abo Al-Mughira Al-Qahtani, and Abo Abdullah Al-Chadi, the organization's chief of media, according to the statement.

"The testimony led the prosecutors to the burial place, which was discovered on Friday morning to complete the rest of the procedures by making DNA tests and then handing over the bodies of the victims to their families," the statement said.

Last week, Sadiq Al-Sour, the director of the Bureau of Investigation of the Libyan Attorney General, announced at a press conference the capture of 11 IS militants killing the Egyptians in Sirte two years ago.

In 2016, the government forces, backed by U.S. air forces, launched a seven-month war on IS militants in Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli, and announced the liberation of the city in December.
