TAIPEI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan residents are spending more time daily on digital devices this year compared to last year, much longer than the time they spend sleeping, according to a survey.

Taiwan residents spent an average of 8.7 hours a day using digital gadgets like mobile phones and tablets, up one hour from last year and nearly two hours longer than their average sleep time, according to the survey released by the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan ahead of World Sight Day on Oct. 12.

Meanwhile, more than 60 percent of the 1,110 respondents said they tend to use multiple screens at the same time, with most of them aged from 20 to 59 years old and more women reporting this habit than men.

The survey also showed that using multiple screens makes users' eyes tired quicker and they suffer blurry vision more often than others who only use one device at a time.

Most respondents said they dislike people using digital devices during a meal, at an event or in bed.

The survey advised users to take a short break after 30 minutes on digital devices and also go outdoors to allow their eyes to relax.
