MEXICO CITY, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the 7.1-magnitude earthquake which rattled central Mexico on Sept. 19 has risen to 363, most of them dying in Mexico City, the government announced Monday.

Luis Felipe Puente, head of the national civil protection agency, said that the number of fatalities in the capital had risen to 222, two more than from Sunday.

Writing on Twitter, Puente said rescue workers were continuing to sift through the rubble of a collapsed office building in Mexico City in search of trapped people, while 25 injured people remain in hospital.

"The large majority have already been operated on, and we are awaiting for the others to be attended to this week. Only four people are still classified as red (in a critical condition)," said Miguel Angel Mancera, mayor of Mexico City, at a press conference.

Mancera added that 764 people remain in the city's 29 temporary shelters although classes began again on Monday at 3,397 schools across the capital.
