WELLINGTON, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Local police in New Zealand have found stolen passports which have been altered in order to purchase goods through finance companies.
Sergeant Caoin Macey of Whakatane police in the Eastern Bay of Plenty said on Thursday that the stolen and altered passports had been obtained by associates of Mongrel Mob, an organized street gang based in New Zealand, who had used them to buy goods through finance companies.
Chinese, Australian and New Zealand passports in particular have been forged, Macey said, alerting local businesses who may take passports as identification.
The sergeant warned that businesses should be vigilant if Chinese or Australian passports are used as identification and photocopies should never be accepted.
Other forms of identification should also be requested in order to conduct further check, Macey said.
