ABUJA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Investment in Nigeria's information and communication technology (ICT) sector has hit 70 billion U.S. dollars, according to figures released Wednesday by a Nigerian government agency.

The progress was recorded from a mere 50 million dollars invested in the sector in 2001 when digital mobile licenses were first issued in the west African country, noted a statement signed by Umar Dambatta, head of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Most of the investments were foreign direct investments, the statement said.

With the national broadband plan currently at 21 percent, Nigeria is working to deepen investments to make broadband pervasive in the country.

"Our target is to hit 30 percent by 2018," the statement said.

With a population of about 170 million, Nigeria has over 150 million active subscribers in the voice segment, over 102 percent tele-density and a little over 92 million internet connections.
