TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Iranian researchers are studying nuclear-fuelled engines for submarines, warships and destroyers, Tehran Times daily reported Wednesday.

Nuclear-fuelled engines will allow the Navy to dispense with fossil fuels during long voyages in international waters, Tehran Times reported, citing Habibollah Sayyari, the commander of the Iranian navy.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) started developing systems for nuclear-powered marine vessels under President Hassan Rouhani's order last year.

Iran has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide technical assistance in devising the nuclear propulsion system.

"We will certainly carry the job within the framework of the nuclear deal and the safeguards agreements and will not do anything beyond that," AEOI chief Ali Akbar Salehi said.
