LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- An acting district police chief was killed in an Taliban ambush in Helmand of southern Afghanistan late Tuesday, a local official said Wednesday.

"Mohammad Sadiq Siddiqi was martyred following an insurgent attack in Qari Posta area, Nad Ali district, late Tuesday," Omar Zwak told Xinhua.

Siddiqi was appointed as the acting police chief of Nad Ali over the weekend after former police chief Colonel Omar Jan Haqmal was killed in a similar incident on Saturday.

Three police officers and two army soldiers were also wounded during the fighting, Zwak said, adding that several militants were also killed and wounded during the gun battle, but their number could not be exactly specified.

Helmand, notorious for poppy growing, is also a known Taliban stronghold.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been on rampage since late April when Taliban insurgents launched their annual rebel offensive and intensified attacks across the country.
