NEW DELHI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and one was seriously injured Friday after a SUV car carrying them fell from a flyover after hitting a passenger bus in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, police said.
The accident took place at Thekkalur in Tirupur district, about 474 km southwest of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
"Today a SUV car carrying local government employees hit a passenger bus, following which it fell from a flyover," a police official said. "In the accident five of them were killed on spot and one was removed to hospital in a critical condition."
Police officials have registered the case and initiated investigations.
Preliminary investigations revealed the SUV was being rashly driven.
According to an official report released this month, on an average, India witnessed over 400 deaths in road accidents every day during 2016.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
