HARBIN/ZHENGZHOU, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Major grain-supplying provinces in China have entered harvest season.

In Heilongjiang, part of the northeastern region known as "China's granary" for its highly productive black soil, farmers have begun harvesting crops from 2.9 million hectares of fields. Local authorities said they began encouraging farmers to prepare for the autumn harvest last week.

Shao Kai, a local farmer, is busy harvesting paddy rice on more than 33 hectares of fields.

"I want to make sure that the rice can hit the market before the Mid-autumn Festival and the National Day holiday," Shao said.

In the central province of Henan, another major grain production base, farmers have already harvested 466,667 hectares of grain, with another 5.7 million hectares waiting to be reaped, according to the provincial department of agriculture.

Henan is expecting a good autumn harvest this year, authorities with the department said.
