Security Council extends mandate of UN mission in Libya

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council Thursday decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for a year till Sept. 15, 2018.

The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2376, which extends the mandate of the mission and tasks, with the supporting of an inclusive political process within the framework of the Libyan Political Agreement.

The UNSMIL's major responsibilities include support for key Libyan institutions, provision of essential services and delivery of humanitarian assistance upon request, human rights monitoring and reporting.

Its responsibilities also include securing of uncontrolled arms and related materiel and counter-proliferation, and assisting Libyan government efforts to stabilize post-conflict zones, including those liberated from the Islamic State.

The mission was first established in September 2011 to support Libya's new transitional authorities in their post-conflict efforts.
