S. African stocks extend losses Thursday

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) extended losses on Thursday despite a weaker rand, which usually favors the local share market.

The South African rand lost ground to major currencies after the United States inflation came better than expected. The local unit traded 0.09 percent weaker at R13.14 to the U.S. dollar.

The all share was off 0.54 percent to 55,850.32 points, and the top 40 index traded 0.54 percent softer at 49,514.83 points. The industrial index was 0.42 percent lower, the financial index lost 0.23 percent and the resources index gave up 1.17 percent.

Platinum miners declined 3.32 percent and gold stocks dropped 0.26 percent.

On the JSE, BHP was off 2.35 percent to R239.56 and Anglo American lost 1.86 percent to R230.89.

Assore lost 3.78 percent to R260 and Exxaro dropped 3.88 percent to R120.52.

Anglo American Platinum tumbled 2.19 percent to R343.3. Impala Platinum lost 6.48 percent to R36.8 and Northam Platinum lost 3.04 percent to R47.2.

Luxury goods maker Richemont was 1.66 weaker at R 1183.

Glencore's share was 2.14 percent down at R61.75.

Among industrials, Aspen rose 8.51 percent to R299.84, but Mediclinic fell 2.47 percent to R124.79. Netcare lost 2.54 percent to R23.44, and Bidvest was off 1.79 percent to R161.36.

PPC added 4.7 percent to R6.24. The stock rallied following news that Nigeria's Dangote approached PPC about a takeover deal.

Retail shares were a mixed bag. The Foschini Group gained 1.65 percent to R141.3, but Woolworths lost 2.7 percent to R588. Enditem
