SYDNEY, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Power was restored in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday evening, after an electronic payment glitch left tens of thousands of people without electricity for three days.

PNG Power Limited said in a statement obtained by Xinhua, that Monday's major system failure was due to "our Easipay Database collapsing due to technical faults."

The pre-paid power system is typically purchased by customers through mobile phone apps or at stores that sell vouchers.

However, on Monday, those without power credit were unable to top-up their accounts.

Left fuming, one PNG resident told local media she "can't cope up with the fact that PNG Power doesn't have a backup system in play."

"It's just unrealistic!" she said.

But with power finally restored, PNG Power thanked its customers for their patience and apologised for the inconvenience.

"PNG Power Limited's information and technology officers, along with our New Zealand Vendor all worked tirelessly around the clock to restore the system," the company said.
