BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, ending a four-day winning streak, as commodity stocks slumped.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.59 percent to close at 3,365.5 points while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.5 percent lower at 10,969.13 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 90.84 points, or 0.33 percent, to 27,522.92 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,492.82 and 27,817.87. Turnover totaled 100.40 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 12.84 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Thursday, bringing an end to a three-day losing streak for the benchmark Nikkei stock index, following reports the debt ceiling in the U.S. will be raised to avert a government shutdown.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 38.55 points, or 0.20 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 19,396.52.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.49 percent higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 39.01 points to 8,022.98. The all-share index went up by 23.63 points, or 0.50 percent, to 4,762.84.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 104.61 points on Thursday, up 0.11 points or 0.11 percent against the previous trading session.

Over 34.361 million shares worth some 459.229 billion Vietnamese dong (some 20.5 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, a decrease of 10.2 percent in volume and 7.8 percent in value against the previous trading session.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed higher by 8.17 points, or 0.14 percent, to a level of 5,832.31 on Thursday.

Some 271,543 transactions were booked, involving 7.2 billion copies of shares with a value of 5.4 trillion rupiah (about 405.9 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) declining 4.41 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 3,228.06.
