KABUL, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) have detained eight persons for alleged drug-related crimes within a week, Afghan authorities said on Wednesday.
"The CNPA have captured eight persons involved in five drug-related cases in Kabul, Takhar, Nimroz and Nangarhar provinces within the last one week," Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force of Afghanistan (CJTF) said in a statement.
The CNPA also seized two vehicles and nine mobile phones from the arrested, in addition to confiscating a handful of narcotics, it noted.
Among those arrestees was a woman, who tried to smuggle about 400 grams of heroin to neighboring India, the statement said.
After an initial investigation, the CNPA has handed over the cases to the Central Narcotics Tribunal (CNT), a special Afghan court for jurisdiction of major drug cases, the statement added.
In 2016, some 4,800 tons of opium was produced in Afghanistan particularly in western and southern parts of the country, where the government security forces have little presence.
Adult drug addicts are estimated at 1.9 million to 2.4 million in the militancy-hit country.
