BERLIN, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday discussed with U.S. President Donald Trump the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in a phone call, both agreeing that Pyongyang's latest nuclear test is an "unacceptable escalation".

Merkel and Trump expressed the view that the international community should continue to exert pressure on DPRK and the UN Security Council should have to adopt further and stricter sanctions, according to Steffen Seibert, spokesman of the German government.

Merkel said Germany would work in the European Union for additional and severe sanctions against DPRK, with the aim to dissuade Pyongyang from its violations of international law and to achieve a peaceful solution to the issue, said Seibert.

Merkel also telephoned this afternoon with Republic of Korea President Moon Jae-in, both calling for a common goal of avoiding a military escalation and enabling a peaceful solution.

Also on Monday, another two EU countries -- Lithuania and Estonia -- condemned DPRK's latest nuclear test.

The DPRK Sunday detonated a hydrogen bomb that can be carried by an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), DPRK's Central Television announced. This was the sixth nuclear test the DPRK has undertaken.
