DHAKA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations refugee agency said here Monday 73,000 Rohingya people have come to Bangladesh after violence killed hundreds of people in Myanmar's restive Rakhine state since late last month.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman Vivian Tan told Xinhua Monday from the country's southeastern Cox's Bazaar district bordering Myanmar that "Aid agencies estimate 73,000 people entered Bangladesh from Myanmar as of Sunday since Aug. 25."
Vivian Tan said they are providing shelter material and basic aid to the newly arrived Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazaar, some 292 km southeast of Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
Thousands of Rohingya people are still crossing border into Bangladesh, she added.
Sources said hundreds of people have still been reportedly stranded in a no man's land at the countries' border after being attacked by armed men in Myanmar.
"We don't know the exact situation on the other side of the border (in Myanmar)," Vivian Tan said.
Myanmar's military said Friday that almost 400 people died in the recent violence in Rakhine triggered by Aug. 25 attacks on security forces.
Dozens of Rohingyas, who came here with gunshot injuries, have been treated at hospitals in southeastern Bangladesh. Some of them have reportedly died later.
Bangladesh officially refuses repeated local and foreign appeals to accept fleeing Rohingyas. Recalling the influx of Myanmar nationals into Bangladesh due to similar military operations in the aftermath of terrorist attacks on Oct. 9, 2016 that resulted in about 85,000 civilians crossing over to Bangladesh, a Bangladeshi foreign ministry official in a statement earlier expressed serious concern at the possibility of the recurrence of such a situation.
According to the statement, Bangladesh already hosts about 400,000 Myanmar nationals.
