LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Lionsgate's "The Hitman's Bodyguard" continued to lead the gloomy North American box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated 12.9 million U.S. dollars in 4-day Labor Day weekend.
"The Hitman's Bodyguard" benefited from the lack of competition in box office because there is no latest release with overwhelming popularity in this Labor Day weekend.
"A roller coaster of a summer season comes to an end with the lowest grossing Labor Day weekend since the late 90's and the first sub 4-billion-U.S.-dollar summer season in North America since 2006," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.
"The good news is that with the expected strong debut of Warner Bros.' horror film 'It,' the fortunes of Hollywood will begin to see a turn for the better in the coming months," he added.
Warner Bros.' "Annabelle: Creation" was still in the second place. It took in an estimated 9 million U.S. dollars in 4-day Labor Day Weekend has earned 88.97 million U.S. dollars through Sunday after just 24 days in theaters in North America.
The Weinstein Company's terrific "Wind River" landed in the third place with an estimated 6.6 million U.S. dollars for the 4-day period in its fifth weekend.
The Weinstein Company's animated adventure tale "Leap" moved to the fourth place with an estimated 6.3 million U.S. dollars for the 4-day period in its second weekend.
Bleecker Street's action comedy "Logan Lucky" finished fifth with an estimated 5.54 million U.S. dollars for 4-day period in its third weekend.
