SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Global car sales by South Korean automakers declined last month over soft exports, industry data showed on Friday.

Five domestic carmakers, including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Ssangyong and Renault Samsung, sold 631,870 vehicles at home and abroad in August, down 1.6 percent from the same month of last year.

Car sales in the domestic market increased 12.2 percent over the year to 120,847 vehicles, but auto exports dipped 4.4 percent to 511,023 units.

Hyundai Motor, South Korea's biggest automaker, sold 336,625 cars in the global and local markets in August, down 6 percent from a year earlier.

Global sales by Kia Motors, affiliated with Hyundai Motor, inched up 1 percent over the year to reach 222,740 units in August.

Hyundai and Kia, the country's top two carmakers, posted weaker global sales due to a sharp fall in sales in China, the world's largest auto market.

During the cited period, Ssangyong Motor's sales dropped 3.7 percent to 11,725 units.

Sales by GM Korea and Renault Samsung posted a double-digit increase to 41,311 units and 19,469 units each last month.
