ALGIERS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Two police officers were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the province of Tiaret, 350 km western the Algerian capital of Algiers.

According to the Department of National Security (DGSN), a man with a gun and an explosive belt was intercepted while trying to target the police post in downtown Tiaret.

A police guard stopped him, and the terrorist detonated his belt, killing himself and two police officers, the source specified.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats.

A few militants affiliated to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and recently established Daesh affiliate groups are still taking refuge in the dense woods in the north, and remote desert areas near the troubled Libya and Mali.
