Uganda win first regional police games

MUKONO, Uganda, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Hosts Uganda are champions of the inaugural Eastern Africa Police Chief's Cooperation Games (EAPCCO) that ended on Tuesday night here in the central district of Mukono.

Asan Kasingye, the Uganda police spokesman told Xinhua that they are proud of hosting and winning the Games.

"Our athletes worked hard to win the Games, but more so we have also bonded better using sports in the region," added Kasingye.

Uganda collected 157 points after bagging 22 gold medals, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals.

"I am glad I have guided Police FC to winning the first trophy since I was selected captain few days ago," skipper Martin Mpuuga told Xinhua.

Hosts Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and South Sudan all participated in the Games which included disciplines like taekwondo, athletics, football, netball, volleyball, shooting and boxing.

Kenya emerged the runners-up after being awarded 4 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 8 bronze medals to score 49 points.

This year's Games were organized under the theme, "Promoting Community Policing and regional cooperation through sports".
