LUSAKA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government has started working on the revision of the minimum wage, the country's labor commissioner said on Tuesday.
Chanda Kaziya said work on the revision of the minimum wage has commenced and was expected to be completed soon.
He said the changing economic situation has forced the government to embark on revising the minimum wage after the first revision which was done in 2012.
"The government is concerned about the low wages and is actively working on changing this," he said during a live television interview on Radio Phoenix, a private radio station.
He did not say when the revised minimum wage will come into effect.
The government, he said, was concerned about challenges in the labor sector, which employers have taken advantage of and were abusing the workers.
He warned that the government will not sit idle and allow employers to continue abusing workers, adding that labor inspections will be intensified.
